Shopper reveals sneaky pricing code at all items at T.J. Maxx - be sure to check the number to score the best deal | The US Sun

A T.J. Maxx shopper has dished out the details on how to score the best deal at the retailer, and it takes just a quick glance at the hang tag.

The chain's sneaky pricing code uses special numbers that give insight into each item - and a shopping expert revealed what number corresponds with each hidden meaning.

T.J. Maxx is one of the top off-price retailers, known for offering name brand and designer picks at prices around 20% to 60% below full-price retailers.

As soon as you step into a T.J. Maxx store, you can be sure that you'll be greeted with affordable homeware, apparel, snacks, beauty products, and more.

Shoppers can learn about the kind of deal they're in for by taking a quick peek at an item's paper hang tag, according to popular content creator Amin Shaykho.

On his TikTok page called Amin Tips (@amintips), where he shares content on shopping tips and life hacks, Shaykho shared how T.J. Maxx embeds secret codes on its price tags.

"If you find a name brand at T.J. Maxx, look at the tag," the entrepreneur encouraged in a viral video from last week, which has since garnered over 7.7 million views.

He instructed his followers to look towards the string of numbers right below the red T.J. Maxx logo, particularly the last digit.

"If there's a one, it's the cheaper version made specifically for T.J. Maxx," explained Shaykho.

If you see a two at the end of the number sequence, then "it's the real item just being sold there at a discount," according to the TikToker.

A seven as the last number indicates that the name brand item was discontinued, he said.

Shoppers in the comments section had mixed views on the accuracy of Shaykho's numbers key.

Many claimed that they worked at T.J. Maxx and offered up differing explanations, such as that the number represents an item's condition or is a date code for when the item was marked down.

Other shoppers argued that the numbers were useless in determining whether or not they would purchase an item.

They said that aspects such as the price, fit, and material play a larger role, as well as the length of the checkout line.

T.J. Maxx isn't the only retailer that sneaks hidden meanings into its price tags via numbers and symbols.

TJ Maxx uses different colored price tags to reveal the type of deal:

Costco likewise uses a numbers system to reveal more information about a product.

For example, while a price tag that ends with $0.99 indicates full price, $0.97 means that an item is on clearance or it's a manager discount.

Additionally, $0.49 or $0.79 means that an item is on sale for a limited time, while $0.00 indicates a deep discount.

Costco also uses an asterisk, dubbed the Costco Death Star, to indicate to members that an item will likely be discontinued, will not be restocked, or is seasonal.

A Costco shopper sparked questions after spotting another secret code on labels.

Meanwhile, Aldi shoppers revealed the meaning behind a "secret code" used nationwide – but it has nothing to do with the price tag.
